Tractor trucks' steering system is complex, at it goes from the steering wheel to the actual wheels. Your truck's drive shaft comprises several elements. Within this system, the Cardan joint, also known as u-joint (or universal joint), is what transmits rotary motion between axes inclined to each other.
The Cardan joint is a mechanical device that joins together one or more rotating axes, allowing for the transmission of torque and rotary motion. It consists of a central axle, an intermediate axle and a cross joint, which allows for any movement to be made between the gearbox and the rear axle, providing an inflection angle of up to 25 degrees. It has an outer bearing, which stabilizes the rotation of the countershaft, and a flexible coupling, to soften the shock of the Cardan joint when moving during travel.
The drive shaft's cross joint is the system's most essential component, since it's responsible for joining the axes. This part may (or not) need maintenance, and its service life directly depends on its proper lubrication.
In addition to the tires' alignment, you should pay close attention to any vibration, sound, or unusual impact when shifting gears; you should also make sure that the joints between parts can move freely when turning the steering shaft so that there is no lag between their movement.
A powertrain failure could result in a number of signs to look for: is the truck vibration increases with speed and distance, for example, or if it's hard or impossible to turn the wheels, or a screeching sound during driver while increasing the speed. In the specific case of the Cardan shaft, it can cause instability and loud noises while the truck is being driven.
Prevent your truck's components from failing by giving them proper maintenance. Doing so will also lower the risk of accidents or unscheduled stops during your work day that can result in higher losses.
